Law 10: The One

"Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful"

Maeda's tenth law of simplicity is a bit of a riddle:

Ten laws (10: one, zero), remove none (0: zero), and you're left with one (1: one). When in doubt, turn to the tenth Law: the one. It's simpler that way  (2006, Law 10: The One).

With the tenth law Maeda provides a final vision of the interaction of complexity and simplicity. He illustrates the downside of being too simplistic with an anecdote of the Japanese rugby team. The national team had become technically proficient in the game but had become to predictable to opponents because their efficiency had made their style of play simplistic. When the goal is to comfort end-users during the adoption process of a technology initiative, simplifying the initiative is a good plan. Making adjustments to simplify an initiative that are not going to support the end users ease of use may deprive users the opportunity to experience meaningful complexity.

Below is the form for your final response for this Simplicity PD. Before you make your final response check that you have completed all learning activities, so that you can receive a digital simplicity badge and are entered into the Starbucks' card drawing. To complete the PD you must:

  • Read the synopsis and analysis for each of the Ten Laws of Simplicity

  • Contribute to the discussion posts for a least three of the laws (participants who contribute to six discussions posts will receive a silver level badge and two entries into the drawing, and participants who contribute to all nine discussions will receive the gold level badge and four entries into the drawing)

  • Completed the final response (located in the form below)

For your final response please provide two to three paragraphs that explain:

  1. What is the most important Law of Simplicity to keep in mind for your technology initiative going forward?

  2. How, specifically, do you see yourself applying that law, and two or three other laws to your technology initiative?

Success! Message received.
